How To Get The Most Money Out Of Scrap Car Buyers

By Henry Green

There are some people who drive their cars until they are ready to fall apart. If you have a vehicle that you've decided to get rid of, but it isn't worth taking to a used car dealer, you should consider scrap car buyers. You have to understand how the process works though in order to get the most money for your junk auto.

The metal weight of the vehicle is what most interests salvage operations and cash for cars businesses. You can spend money tinkering with the auto by installing new parts in the hope the junker will run again. You probably won't get the money back out of it though because the new parts aren't what's of value to junk auto buyers.

It's not going to matter that the air conditioning is working or you have a custom stereo system. These may have value in the parts market, but not when you are selling a vehicle for salvage. In the same vein, you won't impress a salvage yard into offering you more because the vehicle is still operable. Salvage yards are mostly concerned with metal recycling.

Selling the parts yourself is an option if you've got plenty of time and the expertise. You might see a bigger profit by selling the parts individually on your own, but it's a labor intensive job. You've got to drain the fluids and remove the transmission, engine, wires, and seats just for starters.

If you already have a buyer for the parts, you'll be way ahead of the game, If not, you'll have to store the parts until you find a buyer. You also have to do some research to find out what the parts you want to sell are worth in your area.

The easiest and quickest way to unload a junker is usually offering it to a salvage yard. You can go online and enter your zip code to the find the ones nearest you. They will usually offer to send a tow truck for the vehicle and pay you cash right then. They even take care of all the paperwork.

The kind of vehicle you're selling is going to determine, in part, how much you get for it. Makes and models that have lasted over time without many changes to them won't bring as much as less common ones. Parts to mass produced vehicles are pretty easy to find, and that keeps the price down. It might be worth your time to shop around and see if you can find a dealer who is specifically looking for parts you're selling.

There are a number of factors you might not think about that can affect the price you get for a junk vehicle. Certain cars are popular in some regions of the country but not in others. If the salvage yard has to send a tow truck a significant distance to pick up a junker, they will reduce the offer they make accordingly. If you have an operational vehicle, you could save a few dollars by delivering it to the yard yourself.
