Some Tips In Choosing Motorcycle Saddlebags

By Jessica Walker

Right now you are interested in this article because you are a motorhead and you are looking for something for you bike. You probably got a big street bike, a cruiser, a hog, or just a plain cafe racer. Either way, you want to buy some motorcycle saddlebags and need a few tips on getting one. Before you do get one then, do read on in this article for some tips on how to choose one.

Try to determine what kind of driver you really are. Do you just ride your bike on weekends or do your really ride it everyday as part of your daily duties? Is your bike use mainly for short trips and jaunts or for longer ones? Such questions will be ones to affect literally what kind of bag you should be getting. If you are just an occasional rider then you may not need such a big one after all especially if you only take short trips.

Next question that you may want to ask also is if you want to buy this item for looks only or outright practicality and functionality. Should you want to get just for looks then you will be more concerned about how it really complements your overall bike look, but if you need for functionality then you may have other considerations.

Getting one for looks then you can basically look at two general designs, whether they be plain or studded. If your bike already has studs then it will pay to go with studded leather designs, if your bike has no studs then you can get away with plain leather satchels. In some cases you will see ones with buckles, however these are just a matter of taste as buckles really serve no additional purpose on these kind of bags.

If you are going for functionality you may consider getting one that not only has ample space but one that may be secure as well in that it may have a lock or some sort of security device. This is especially helpful for when you are on longer trips and you would probably be carrying more cargo that you need to keep safe.

How often you use your bike and for what purpose will determine what kind of mounting mechanism you should use for your saddlebags. If you are a perennial rider then your saddlebag mounting would be either a hard mount or quick disconnect system as these are more reliable in the long run. It also takes some mechanical skill to install this.

Price will also affect your decision. But not to worry there are plenty of discounts to be had online and you can always find a good deal. Without discounts, expect to spend at least over two hundred dollars for a decent unit.

Before you make a final decision though, try to determine if it is really a need or if it is just a want. You must determine if you want one just to look cool or if you want one because there is a practical purpose to it. If it is the former reason then make sure that it adds value to your bike and not take away from it.
