Locating And Purchasing Wire Wheels For Cars

By Paul Bell

An easy and low cost way to customize your vehicle is to fit some aftermarket rims. Most cars are made and fitted with alloy or steel rims as standard and there are many suppliers who can offer an upgrade which will improve the looks of a car. If you are searching for and buying wire wheels for cars there are a lot of suppliers and some care is needed before you place an order.

Wheels for a vehicle can be purchased off the shelf for a large number of the cars that are on the road today. They range in size, color and number of spokes and they will all be priced differently so there is an option for all budgets. There a many internet suppliers who stock them and there are automotive stores who can supply you with a set of wire rims.

If new rims are out of your price range you may choose to buy a second hand set. You can find them in reasonable condition for around 200 bucks and many junk yards, recycling centers and auto shops will offer them for sale. Some of them may need a little work doing to restore them to a good condition and there are firms that can polish or powder coat them.

For those with a large budget, and who may be looking for something special, you can get your wire rims custom made to your own specification. Varying in size and number of spokes, a set of bespoke wheels will start from around 2000 dollars and the price rises if you want larger sizes with more spokes. The center fixing cap can also be personalized with a logo or text.

If you decide to upgrade the rims on your car you should consult a mechanic and check a couple of things first. If the diameter of new wheels purchased, is larger than the ones currently fitted, you may have to make some major modifications to allow them to turn properly. Other modifications to the brakes and springs may also be required and this is sometimes expensive.

One of the most important things to check is that you have the correct tools in the trunk of the car in case you get a puncture and need to change a wheel. The regular tools that the manufacturer supplied will not be any good as they will not fit the center nut. All of the accessories can be purchased from the company that supplies the new rims or from another retailer.

Correct maintenance of wire rims is also important and something to consider. Cleaning and polishing the many spokes is time consuming and tricky but there are a few tips which may help. Small brushes and old clothing can be used to get into the awkward areas behind spokes. You will also need to remove the rims periodically to properly clean behind them and check them for any corrosion.

Before you buy and fit aftermarket parts for your car it is worth hiring a qualified mechanic to make sure the modifications are done properly. If you buy online it is worth noting that you may not get the aftercare that is offered by local retailers. It is advisable to retain the original steel rims or alloys in case you want to sell the car in the future.
